PASUM ; some heads-up!
I doubt any of you don't know what PASUM is but just in case you don't know, fret not, bcs I was just like you, a friend of mine introduced me to PASUM weeks before SPM (I remember how I went like "huh, pasum? apa tu?" )
Basically, PASUM or Pusat Asasi Sains Universiti Malaya is a foundation centre that offers these courses; Foundation in Life Science and Foundation in Physical Science. (In this post, I'll give more details for life science bcs I took that course). Basically is for those who intend on pursuing science-related course later on for undergraduate studies (this is for session 19/20 at least. Im not sure if they will change the courses offered for the next sessions, that will depend on the management of PASUM / UM itself.)
SO I actually took this picture on the first day of class !!
Without further ado, lesgo !
1) Requirements
You can refer to the UPU website or even better, or you can access all the information via app UPU pocket in your smart phone. Everything necessary should be there :D
2) Subjects
We studied for about 10 months in PASUM. 2 semesters, 5 months each.
During the 1st semester these are the subjects that a student must take. (you got no options hahah and yes you still kena ambil physics walaupun Hayat. It's okay, hang in there, you got this!)
*These are my opinions for each subject.
For maths, it's best if you can remember your add maths in high school because you're basically doing your add maths again but with tambah tambah benda baru here and there. For biology, some of it you have learned for SPM also but most are SPM biology in greater details.
For chemistry, you gotta have a strong basic bcs you'll be learning some new stuff, new concept. Don't worry, it will be do-able in shaa allah !! ๐ค
For Physics, if you're not a fan, just don't give up. Might not be easy at first, but you'll get used to it. Best if you have a strong basic, especially in your form 4 topics . If you take Hayat course, you won't learn about vectors but you have to apply it in your Physics. If you have a hard time with vectors later on, you can always meet your lecturers. They will be super happy to help you!!
for MUET, I'd suggest you to never skip your english classes and do your exercises in your MUET book that will be compulsory for everyone to buy. and i guess, just do your very best! If you plan to apply for MBBS UM later, you should aim for band 4 and above. Most course in UM requires a band 3 at least. The highest band would be band 6.
And for Jati Diri, it's a special class for PASUM students where you'd learn about values in life. Personally, I think of this class as 'class untuk menenangkan fikiran' because you wont have to use your brain as much. So, just have fun haha! My lecturer was amazingly inspiring and he speaks Japanese! Sometimes he invites exchange students to lectures so we could learn a bit of Japanese language which is fun. (OH that's also because we have a topic that is related to the lifestyle of the Japanese people)
IT is the class where you'll learn about basic IT knowledge ( also a class to menenangkan fikiran ) and for English during sem 2, good news! no essays. You'll learn to present and do presentations in this class.
If I can give an advice to myself before entering PASUM, it would be: Do anything you want fathin ๐. Because trust me, you will be super busy and your schedule is going to be very packed. so, get all your beauty sleep, do your favourite hobby sampai puas and learn/ improve as much skills as you can before you masuk pasum :)
3) Lectures , Tutorial classes and Labs.
- Lectures
There will be 2 main lecture halls for students. 1 is the auditorium in PASUM baru and another 1 is Dewan Kuliah Utama (DKU) in PASUM lama. (PASUM baru / lama is just the term we use sebab PASUM ada 2 kompleks yang berbeza bcs they just built the new PASUM complex.) Hayat students used the Audi during the 1st sem while the physical kids guna DKU. For second sem, terbalik. So, everyone can experience studying in both lecture halls ๐.
First ever lecture |
#sawahbelakang #iykyk |
Basically, Audi / DKU is the place where you will have your lectures (where you'll belajar together with the other 200 students). From my experience these places are cold and I didnt know why I have never brought any sweaters to lectures. Tak pernah teringat nak bawa, then everytime lecture menyesal hahah. Also a very nice place to take a nap!! especially DKU. COLD AND DIM LIGHTS some more. memang ajak tidur.
My first day in DKU. Srs masuk terus menguap hahahaah. IDK man... the AURA is something else |
These are some of maaany lecture hall selfies bcs I take selfies to stay awake in lectures ๐ค๐ป๐ |
The point is!! In lectures, focus. Try your best not to sleep. If you are lucky, some lecturers will highlight the important bit yang akan masuk finals and which one you should not give so much attention to (especially the subjects that require you to memorize a lot. you know what I mean right )
They will also mention the points yang tak ada dalam their slides which is really important for you to grab. Some lecturers tak bagi lecture notes. So, you must learn to copy the points from their slides quickly and accurately because that is what you are going to use to study for your exams. ...
*pro tip : take picture as fast as you can and salin right away because you'll tend to forget to salin when you are in your room. (or maybe I je kot selalu lupa )
- Tutorial Classes
When I first heard of the word tutorial, it reminded me of the tutorials you watch on youtube haha ๐คฃ BUT ITS NOT . It's basically your homework that you have to complete before your tutorial class (it’s a series of questions sometimes 10 questions sometimes only 5, it depends ๐
) so you can discuss the answers together with your assigned lecturer during your tutorial class.
This is a part of one of my maths tutorial |
- Some tutorials are *very important* because they are marked and the marks are included in the carry marks (which I would discuss later on)
- Do not procrastinate hahah find time to do it ! ( I wish I had someone to shout this to my ear everytime I choose to baring on my bed instead of siapkan tutorials hahah) If you procrastinate, it will PILE UP and tetibe you have so much to do.
- It will be really helpful during exam szn if you siapkan and get to discuss in class. When you are studying for your exam you can just review the tutorials bcs questions in exam are usually related to question in lecture notes and tutorials.
- Tutorial classes are also the only time you can ask questions personally to your assigned lecturer which is GREAT bcs sometimes you dozed off in lectures #plsdontdothat and some lecturers explain about certain topics in greater details during tutorial classes.
Sometimes, you have to do presentations in a group of 4/5 and the marks for that presentation is included in your carry mark during tuto class also.
Ohh yess, you will have to sit for your quizzes too for Bio during your bio tutorial class so make sure you read through beforehand. (Ofc, the marks for the quiz is important sebab masuk carry marks)
The people in your tutorial classes or your tutomates are the people whose birthday are close to yours . Cool right? Can celebrate bday together ๐๐ and usually its less than 20 ppl per class.
So you get my point right, finish your tutorial before your class and have fun!
We had a Class picnic to celebrate our Birthdays! ๐❤️ |
Sometimes we go out to eat together too! This one was when we had a shell out dinner together ๐ |
Last Bio tutorial class with our amazing bio lecturer, Dr Yusmin ๐ |
And this one was the last class picture we took because Ms Rona came to Malaysia. ๐ #lastdayinpasum |
OMG AAAA throwback to the time I became a plant mom because I answered a question correctly during Bio tuto class! hehehehe Thank you dr Mahanom for introducing me to the #plantmom life ๐ต๐ |
With our very own mentor who is super duper nice and is very helpful alhamdulillah. Thank you sir Hafizul, because of you physics become bearable ❤️ |
Throwing it back to the FIRST ever picture we took as a class ❤️ #HA2 ! |
For Hayat students, you will be having 3 lab sessions every week while the physical students have 2 lab sessions each week .The labs are for each science subject ; bio, chem, physics (some weeks tak ada labs , it depends on your schedule) . Bear in mind that the duration for each lab session is 3 hours where you will conduct your own experiment with the guide from your lab demonstrator.
- Labs
Your technic marks will be taken when you are conducting the experiment and your lab report will be marked by your respected lab demo. So make sure siapkan lab reports on time and scan through your experiment before the day youll have you lab bcs you dont want to finish your experiment late . Both technic mark and lab report mark are included in your overall carry mark. Most probably, you will be asked to draw the methods of experiment before the lab session which is good so tak blur sangat during lab ๐ฅด
This is one of my lab jotter drawings for methods of experiment ✏️ |
For physics, you’ll have to take a quiz in the lab (where the mark for that quiz will be included in ur carry mark) before you start doing your experiment. After that, you’ll be carrying out your experiment in a group of 3. For physics and bio, you have to siapkan lab report and hand it in BEFORE the lab ends. So in that three hours, kena siapkan experiment and also lab report!
*Pro tip: ask ur friend yang dah buat certain experiment so you’ll have some heads up esp for the hard ones. But dont worry, the lab demos are always inside the lab to help u out (most of the lab demos are our tuto lecturers btw ๐)
If you ask me to pick a favourite, it would be bio! Because you will have to DRAW A LOT which to me is very therapeutic so I enjoy Bio labs hahaha (but not when the lab demos jerit “OKAYYY hantar sekarangg lab nak tutup, then u know it’s gelabah hours ๐)
Oh yea picturessss!
More pictures! ๐ฆ |
Last bio lab with Sis #bestestlabdemo ❤️ |

Last chem lab with Sir hafiz yang sangatlah baik :’) ๐งช |
4) Tests, quizzes, assesments, presentations and Final exams + carry marks ? ๐✏️
If you wonder how you are assessed in PASUM, read this.
Basically, 50% of your whole marks for a subject is your Carry mark (test, quizzes ,asessments) and the other 50% comes from your final exam.
Pretty sure everyone is familiar with final exams right? The usual exams tapi theyre all subjective questions and that’s it. One paper per subject. Oh yeaaa for finals, do a lot of past year questions, questions in lecture notes and also tutorials. Then, make doa always. You’ll ace it insha allah ๐๐ป
And your carry marks consists of the Tests,Quiz, lab and assesments.
- Quizzes are the ones you take in tutorial classes and labs (physics). They are a collection of small small questions. *some tips: it’s best if you keep all your quiz questions bcs most of the time the questions will come out for finals. So later when youre studying for finals you can review back on the questions.
- Test is your mid term test and they are objective questions . One paper per subject.
- Assessments are usually for bio where you have to do a project in a group.
- And Labs (we’ve discussed about this, so check it out ๐ต✌๐ป)
- Presentations. Some subjects (bio and maths usually) will require you to do presentations during your tuto classes about certain topics. So do your best, engage with ur audience as much as possible. If youre the audience, make sure to ask questions and be an active listener.
The point is never ever ever take your carry marks lightly. They are as important as your finals because sometimes markah dekat borderline and carry marks yang selamatkan. If I could talk to the past Fathin, I’d tell her to buat experiment betul betul bcs she broke 2 lab apparatus AND that cost me 10 ringgit okay (I couldve bought 2 nasi kandar for dinner with that money ๐) also to alwaaaaaays study before taking any quizzes. Sometimes i forgot i have a quiz on a certain day so lupa study #thenregret so yall shud probably set a reminder!!
Yep, that’s pretty much it ๐ธ
5) A Day in Pasum (attire and what to bring to lecture/tuto class)
So.. how is it like a day at school? Basically you wake up in the morning and all that and walk to pasum. A walk usually take u around 15 mins. You can reach pasum in 5 mins if u run (I tried that befor, it felt like running for a marathon). If you reside in kolej 11 , it’s about 1km to pasum. I remember during my first day in PASUM... i actually reached 10k steps I WAS SHOOKETH hahahha #badansihatotakcergas
You’ll have your class/ lecture earliest at 8:00am (If youre lucky, you class might start at 9 am so can sleep an hour more) until 2:00 pm. Class/lecture resumes at 3 pm until 5 pm paling lambat (it can end at 4 pm if your schedule allows you). Between classes you will only have an hour to solat zuhur and lunch.
After 5pm, class ends and u walk back to ur kolej. On some days, the weather IS SUPER DUPER HOT. So bring a cap or payung or not u’ll get sunburnt. Sometimes if lab waktu petang, we’d just call a grab to bring us back bcs PENAT and panasssss ๐ฅด
And there u have it. A day in pasum. Penat but u can do this!! ๐คฉ
- GIRLS
Baju kurung, kebaya, kebarung, jubah , blouse + skirt
*just dont wear pants and u’ll be fine
Footwear : i’d suggest anything that is comfortable that covers ur feet bcs you have to wear shoes that cover your feet when you have labs though. A lot of us wear sports shoes and baju kurung (which to me was a bit weird at first but I also got used to it and pakai shoes and baju kurung sometimes). Haha but I started wearing sandals to pasum during sem 2 *whoops* bcs susaaahlah nak bukak pakai kasut masa dekat surau and my sandals is white so its MUCH easier to match with a lot of baju #girlsproblem just make sure you dont get caught hahahah
But my point is!! make sure it’s comfy bcs you’ll have to walk far and you’ll walk A LOT.
For girls without tudung, make sure the colour of your hair is not too crazy like red or purple or green. Brown or black is great ๐๐ผ
On fridays, I always see boys wearing kurta / baju melayu top with black slacks. So i guess that is allowed as well.
I dont really know much about attire for boys, but you can always refer to your admission letter.

I wear jubah everytime I decide to wake up late bcs sarung je and ure good to go!๐ also, this is the library in Pasum :) |
You can also wear blouse and kain like my friend on the right #himimi hehe |
My girls and I in kurung! #girlgang ๐ |

I dont really know much about attire for boys, but you can always refer to your admission letter.
- What to bring to lecture/ tutorial class?
Im not sure about everyone else, but I didnt really know back then what to really bring to lecture during my first week in pasum. Well here’s a list of stuff I’d recommend you to bring during lecture.
- Stationery ( pens je pun okay you dont need a lot honestly )
- Calculator
- Paper (A4/ foolscap)
- Lecture notes! (You can buy them from kedai fotokopi at kolej or u can access them through your smartphone via spectrum web)
- Tutorials
- Food to munch in case you dont have time for lunch or it helps when youre sleepy in lectures. (Like biscuits, dynamites, kuih) idk i brought nasi lemak once and makan in-between lectures HAHAH bcs i didnt have time at allll to eat on that day ๐ #yagirlishungry
If you have an iPad / tablet and an apple pencil/ stylus, item number 1,3 and 4 arent needed. Just bring your tablet/ iPad to lecture and go paperless!! I personally prefer using iPad in lectures. It somehow keeps me awake and it is easier to sort your lecture notes , tutorials and your personal notes . You can basically do your tutorial everywhere and have everything sorted out. No more missing documents.
I do my tutorial in ipad for the ones yang dont have to send in. Easy to review balik and it looks more organized hehe |
And you can make pretty nice notes too :) |
6) Activities in PASUM (non-academic activities)
Pasum organizes 2 main events each year which are Jogathon and Malam Anugerah Emas.
And that’s it, folks!
Pasum organizes 2 main events each year which are Jogathon and Malam Anugerah Emas.
- Jogathon is a 5km run / jog / walk ๐ in UM. Every year ada its own theme. Ours was Tanoshi run and I the theme was anime. It was fun to run together with your friends, administration staff and lecturers. You can basically run while dressing up (or not) according to the theme which is pretty fun. So! My friend made me join her pakai these really cute hijab space buns for the run and it actually turned out great hahaha #hihanna . Oh, of course they have prizes for the winners! Well, I didnt get to the podium ๐ #whatissports #dontknowher but whats for sure is we absolutely had so MUCH FUN! ๐
My cute frens! ๐ง๐ผ♀️๐ |
Hijab Space buns and hanna’s hairclips #keepingithalal |
So the space buns girls made it to the finishing line ๐❤️ I wanted my space buns to look like sailor moon’s though but no one could guess who i dressed up as #sad ๐๐๐ |
Friends dearest ❤️๐งก๐๐๐ |
Can u believe we went straight to kyochon after the run..... HAHAHA #pink4lyfe |
- Malam anugerah emas or mae is your usual school annual dinner which is held for awards presentation, students performances and of course for makan makan with everyone! Of course it had its own theme and the theme was black and gold for our MAE. And yes... i decided to wear red #sorrypasum ๐๐
My beaaaaautiful bebes ๐ |
Roomies ๐ฅฐ❤️ |
Some selfies! ✌๐ป๐ฆ |
We had our dinner at Marriot Putrajaya. The water is blue, literally. |
More pictures with friends ๐ |
And.... fathin and her red dress hahahaha #imeanwhenelsecanigoagainsttherules ๐ |
Basically to me, pasum is very fast-paced. On some days you might feel very overwhelmed with just everything and that is okay. Most importantly, set your goals and work for it. Since you dont have a lot of time for everything, teamwork is pretty much important. Work with your friends - exchange notes, have discussion together and help each other out. I find that if you work alone, you will get less work done and more work will pile up. All that will give you a lot of stress and you dont want that. Ask and just ask anyone (be it ur friends, your lecturers or the internet via face to face or whatsapp) when you dont know anything.Dont be scared to approach any lecturers. Lecturers in PASUM are amazing. Im serious, they are very helpful, super nice, will help you until you really grasp the topic. They are really caring AND THE MOST IMPORTANT they are somehow my inspiration to never ever ever give up. If they can finish their studies until phd level, so can you. I always have that in my mind. #Thankyoulecturers ❤️.So dont keep any of your problems to yourself . If you keep it to yourself, you will delay your work, and that is the beginning of something bad hahah. Talk to your family when you need emotional support esp! Call them always, dont keep everything to yourself. That’s not healthy sisss ๐. Insha allah, Allah will ease your journey ❤️
I wish you all the best and have fun! Whatever it is, don’t give up. Instead, learn to take a break. Make doa always. Trust me, you can do this ❤️
Don’t hesitate to ask me if you are curious about anything pasum related :)
You can always reach me via my email : fathinnajwa@gmail.com or dm me through my instagram @fathinnajwa
Next post will be about KUAZ!
Till then, take care <3
